The purpose of firewalls is to protect IT systems or individual computers within the system against unwanted access. In the framework of a holistic security solution, these are always an important component of the security concept.

It is not a firewall’s job to detect malicious attacks, but it contains the rules for network communication. In order to detect malicious attacks, additional intrusion detection systems can be superimposed on firewalls.
